About me

Hi, my name is Carol and I live near Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk.  I enrolled with OCA at the end of August 2012 but due to moving house in the autumn decided to start my course on 01 Jan 2013.   The purpose of this blog is to record my photographic learning and experiences as I progress through The Art of Photography course.

After years of taking holiday snapshots with a ‘point and shoot’ camera, I have been taking a serious interest in photography since the beginning of 2011.  Armed with a compact system camera I took some short adult education photography courses at my local village college and then followed a couple of online photography courses run by ‘Practical Photography’ magazine.  Through involvement with the latter I have become an active member on Flickr and have just completed ‘View 52: a year in pictures’ which involved taking one picture a week during 2012.  Having become hooked on photography, I upgraded to a Nikon DSLR last year.

I feel that I have hit a plateau with my photography at the moment and would like to go a stage further and bring creativity and feeling to my pictures – I want to create images rather than just take them.  I’m not a creative or arty person by any means and the artistic side of photography is something that I really struggle with.  I am hoping that this course will find some hint of creativity lurking deep inside me and will drag it kicking and screaming to the surface.  I am also looking forward to taking part in structured learning which will challenge me and encourage me to expand my horizons outside my comfort zone.

Currently my main interest is in taking pictures of modern architecture, however I now live next to a nature reserve and am feeling the urge to  go there with my camera when the weather is a little warmer.

I am also completely new to blogging so please bear with me as I grapple with the intricacies of WordPress.

Hi there. This is a great website. I’m very interested in doing the photography degree online with OCA. Just wondering what your general feedback is?

    Thanks – Paul

      Hi Paul,

Glad you like the website and thanks for the compliment. General feedback on OCA – how long have you got? Seriously, it works for me as it’s distance learning so fits around my full time job and I’m also fairly self-motivated. I am not a creative person so I decided to do this course to try and bring that aspect to my photography and it’s certainly helping there. I believe that you get out of this course what you put in, so it can be quite hard work and there are always things that can be done – reading, research, exhibitions et. The course notes say about 8 hours a week, tbh I probably do about 15 hours a week, some people do a lot more, some get by with 8, depends on circumstances (and it does grow to fit your spare time!). There is a very good Flickr group which is worth browsing as you will find that people there have asked similar questions: http://www.flickr.com/groups/ocarts/
      Hope this helps, Carol
